During the first week, Dr. Kate, along with the rest of the team, performed 2,053 vision exams, delivered 3,857 pairs of glasses to patients, and took 35 orders for custom glasses. Those custom orders were for high-prescription glasses/special needs and will be made in the U.S. and delivered to those patients later this year. There were also hundreds of referrals made to Jamaican hospitals for sight-saving surgery.
Dr. Kate smiled as she told us of the young girl who was able to see the world for the first time without blurred vision. Some patients traveled more than five hours to attend the clinic and almost all patients stood in line for five hours or longer to be seen by the doctors and nurses. The generosity of these mission volunteers will be remembered by each individual whose sight was impacted; just as their smile of gratitude will be remembered by each of the members of the iCare team.
